I was excited to see Kiev! Several of my expat friends had traveled there and really enjoyed it. Of course, visiting somewhere is quite different than living there. I traveled to Kiev for the first time on my own. I stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel which was quite fancy. It was January 30, and it was mo fo cold. And I do mean mo fo! Despite the cold and a lot of walking outside, my first impression was very positive. The Christmas (celebrated January 7th) decorations were still up and the city was bright! Everyone was nice. Possibly less smelly men. Even though there were NO Starbucks, I soon found some great coffee cafes that were A-Okay! I also learned quickly how much smaller Kiev is than Moscow, and how much easier it is to get around. I had a few days with an apartment relator and driver looking at many different places. I have just a couple of pictures of the main downtown street, "Kreshatik" all lit up for Christmas. I knew Kiev was going to be okay.
